Herts Canoe Club is open to experienced new members as well as beginners. We are a very friendly bunch, and have members of all ages and abilities.
If you are a beginner and have never paddled before, or even if you have but it's been a while and you'd like to brush up on the basics, our Beginners Kayak Course is for you.
If you have previous paddling experience and would like to skip the beginners course then we can arrange for you to be assessed by one of our coaches. You would be expected to display a good level of competency across a variety of skills - we're not looking for pro level paddling, but we need to know you will be safe on the water.
You must be experienced in using a neoprene spray deck, including performing a safe exit.
You are required to have experience of paddling on moving water.
(There are several weirs in the area - grade 2 depending on water levels.)
A full list of competencies and the sort of questions we might ask can be found here.
Not sure if you’re ready? If these skills feel unfamiliar, our Beginners Kayak Course is a fantastic way to brush up and work towards becoming a club member.
The assessment is an informal session where the coach will paddle with you to review your skills. If they consider that you are able to paddle at an appropriate standard, then you will be able to join immediately.
The assessment itself is free, you just pay for any kit that you hire - see prices below
Assessments take place during our usual paddle days - Sundays from 9.30am - 12.30pm
To arrange a suitable date for your assessment, please contact us at infohertscanoe@gmail.com.
If your assessment is completed successfully and you wish to join the club, you will then pay your membership fee to continue paddling with us.
